Recalling images from the past inevitably changes and distorts them.

If we could look into our memories directly, images would render in imperfect ways. They would be jumbled, sometimes fuzzy, sometimes unnaturally sharp, often raw and colorless, other times overly sharp and vivid.

This gallery collects images that were made to artistically reflect the imperfect representation of memories of the past as if they were rendered directly from the subconscious, before the conscious mind can apply the filters of knowledge of the subject matter.

They show how, in the artist mind, images would be perceived if they were transfered from one person to another without supporting context.

To aid the creative process, all images in this gallery were taken and edited with an iOS device. This is an ongoing project.

High Speed Photography

Taking high speed photos is an involved process of trial and error. To create these images, I built an electronic device that is connected to a speed-light capable of very fast flashes, and a microphone. The device listens for sounds over a certain threshold, and when one is detected it makes the speed-light go off after a programmable delay (microseconds). The delay is used to “wait” that the event becomes visually interesting (for example glass shards spreading in all directions). Taking high speed photos with this device involves setting up the camera on a tripod, adjusting the position, focus and exposition so that it is set to take a sharp and well exposed photo in the exact spot where the event will occur and setup the “event” so that it will happen exactly in that position, filling the frame as much as possible. The event is usually an object falling, a projectile piercing through a bottle, a steel nut falling on a light bulb or anything else that makes a sharp sound and creates an interesting visual effect. When everything is set, the lights go off in the room (everything happens in complete darkness), the device is activated, and the camera shutter is opened. When the event makes a sound (for example the projectile hits the bottle or the steel nut crashes the light bulb), the device makes the speed-light flash and freezes the image forever. You never know what the image is going to look like until you actually see it, and it is surprising every time.
